THIS Sunday will see Inverclyde’s Christmas festivities get on song big time at Cappielow.

Morton are holding their third Carols at Cappielow service in conjunction with Inverclyde Christian Initiative, The Salvation Army and Clydeside Singers.

Topping the bill this year is X Factor star Nicholas McDonald — who makes no secret of his love of everything to do with Christmas — as well as Greenock’s very own singing star Peter Morrison, who moved back to his home town some time ago and impresses visiting friends with his view over the Clyde.

Also taking part will be Ton legend Andy Ritchie. His exalted presence will remind many fans of his numerous memorable appearances for the club.

Christmas has become so commercialised that it is heartening to see this event concentrating, as Ton chairman Douglas Rae says, ‘on the real meaning’ of it to young and old.

It hardly seems any time since last Christmas, when, as usual, it was practically impossible to enter a shop without hearing Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody.

Apparently lead singer Noddy Holder and bass player Jim Lea, who jointly wrote the song, receive an average of £250,000 each in royalties every year.

Now that’s what you call a nice wee festive bonus.

Sunday’s event at Cappielow, however, will be in the traditional Christmas spirit, and is yet another heartening example of Morton’s inspiring involvement in the Inverclyde community.

Let’s hope a sizeable audience goes along to raise the Yuletide roof!
