LAST week the Transport Minister Humza Yousaf MSP announced that the ferries policy review, which is analysing future procurement of Scottish Government ferry contracts, will be extended to further consider the full impact of EU state aid rules.

The additional work will focus on whether the direct award of a contract would comply with the complex regulations governing state aid, whilst also satisfying the so called ‘Teckal exemption’.

However, before the Scottish Government can consider making a direct award, we also need to make sure it would comply with complex state aid rules.

This will require further engagement with the Commission.

I welcome this announcement by the Minister that every consideration is being given to the procurement of future Scottish Government ferry contracts.

CalMac’s HQ is obviously based in Inverclyde and the company is a major employer in the area.

Our ferry services are iconic transport links that play a vital role for our local economy.

It is vital that they continue to support the communities they serve, as well as delivering best value for taxpayer’s money.

LAST week I undertook a round-country trip to pipe at every professional football ground in Scotland as part of my charity Pipeathon initiative.

I want to thank all the football clubs in Scotland, the Scottish fire and rescue service, Arnold Clark, EE and McDonald’s, as well as every individual who has donated so far.

I would like to encourage the wider public to please get in touch with my office to see how they can contribute.
