THIS weekend’s Cowal Games will be a major attraction for the people of Inverclyde, and tomorrow night’s curtain-raiser revives happy memories of one of Scotland’s major sporting occasions.

For one of the big personalities of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will be in Dunoon tomorrow at the traditional ‘Sunset Ceremony’ — none other than gold medal-winning boxer Charlie Flynn, below, of “the postman always delivers” fame.

His live TV interview after his triumph turned him into an instant celebrity, and he is sure to be a knockout with the crowds across the water.

The Dunoon organisers have done well to secure his services to get their big weekend off to a flying start. He was anything but jiggered after his top-notch fight, and will no doubt enjoy the performance tomorrow of Inverclyde’s Reely Jiggered Scottish folk rock band, who are on the bill.

Entertaining Reely Jiggered are much in demand, and are also playing on 6 September at the Largs Viking Festival, ahead of a new album release later next month.

Charlie’s visit might encourage some of Inverclyde’s many young boxers to catch the ferry to take part in shadow boxing coaching sessions with him, and he will have his treasured and well-deserved gold medal on display for pictures with fans.

His comments after his win displayed a lot of common sense about the benefits of sport in fighting obesity. He’s an outstanding fitness role model for all youngsters!
