‘THROUGH the Keyhole’ is one of my favourite TV programmes, so I was delighted to get the chance to visit Gourock’s very own 15th century castle, which comes complete with keyhole-style windows.

Stepping into Castle Levan takes you back in time, and, like all respectable old buildings, it boasts a ghost.

This is not the kind of dwelling that would suit everyone, with the steep, stone spiral staircases and no less than 14 rooms to clean! But it has a special atmosphere you won’t find in any normal abode.

Owners Jan and Lydia Edlman from the Czech Republic clearly love their castle and will be sad to leave. They even have their own battlements with panoramic views over the Clyde.

It’s something of a culture shock to come across the imposing fortress nestling in the middle of quiet, residential streets.

Walking down the ancient stone steps to the front door, you are greeted by a large model of a meerkat grinning at you.

This regal residence, you realise, is occupied by people with a quirky sense of humour.

Jan and Lydia retreated to Castle Levan from the hurly burly of life in London. There could hardly be a greater contrast between rushing around the big smoke and taking things much easier in your very own citadel by the sea.

With any luck, they’ll sell their home to a celebrity — and give manic ‘Through the Keyhole’ presenter Keith Lemon the chance to come calling!
