A GOOD job can provide a sense of worth and wellbeing, as well as equipping you with the skills you need for the rest of your working life.

That’s why high levels of youth unemployment are so thoroughly dispiriting. It scars the lives of young people, weakens our economy and adds billions to the social security bill.

At a time of increasing global competition it is even more concerning. We need to be educating and training the next generation of skilled workers, to ensure we can punch above our weight on the world stage, through innovation and enterprise.

Labour’s Compulsory Jobs Guarantee will make sure long term youth unemployment is a thing of the past.

We will guarantee jobs for all people aged 18-24 who have been on unemployment benefit for a year, and all adults aged 25 or over on unemployment benefit for two years.

The government will deliver this by paying full wages and NI costs directly to the business, as well as support to help businesses with set-up and admin costs.

Training and development will play a central role, guaranteeing not only a job but an ongoing learning experience that will provide the skills necessary for a future in the workplace.

This Labour policy will add an extra 14,000 jobs in Scotland, giving people who have been unemployed for a while the sense of direction that skilled work can provide.

It is also a fully funded promise, paid for by a tax on bankers bonuses. It is ridiculous that those at the top continue to receive sky-high salaries, while we have an ongoing jobs and cost of living crisis.

Of course, this isn’t the only example from this week showing how Labour will make the millionaires pay their share.

These last few weeks we became aware of the staggering failure of the Tories to get to grips with tax avoidance. Incredibly their reluctance to tackle this problem has seen them collect 90 per cent less than the previous Labour government.

Such tax evasion leaves our country billions of pounds worse off every year, meaning even more of a squeeze on key public services.

For those who are rich enough, this might not be a worry. But for those suffering under the Tory-led government, it is a travesty.

Labour will act in the first months of government to introduce a Finance Bill that will close the loopholes that lets the millionaires get off scot-free.

Only Labour will make those at the top pay their fair share, providing the job-led recovery that will benefit the many.
