Health closure is a mistake

I AM writing to express my disappointment at the possible closure of the Phoenix Health Project due to their funding not being continued.

I am a member of Parenting Again, a group made up of grandparents raising their grandchildren.

We do not get any support from the statutory bodies.

The only support we do get is from Ann Brogan, who works at Phoenix Health.

Without her and the administrative support given by the project it is unlikely this group will be able to continue, therefore leaving an already isolated and forgotten group of people even more isolated.

Phoenix Health Project assists many groups of people who tend to fall through the net of the statutory bodies, including disabled people, by looking at healthy-living initiatives and facilities that are accessible to disabled people.

This initiative will not happen if Phoenix Health Project closes.

They also help children with emotional and behaviour difficulties, through the Children First Project which operates out of their premises.

People with addiction problems are also helped through their sports programmes, indeed as reported in the Tele, some of their members were chosen to play in the Homeless World Cup.

These are just a few of the projects that Phoenix Health Project runs, and that will not be picked up by any other group or statutory body, indeed, most of the people who are involved as service-users of the project would not attend sessions run by statutory organisations.

Phoenix Health Project works, it serves a large number of Inverclyde residents and is doing an excellent job.

In these days where we are constantly being told to get fit, etc, it seems to me that someone making the decision to stop the group"s funding is making a big mistake.

If it isn"t broken, don"t fix it.
