His story starts with his great great grandfather Donald McLean who was born around 1791 and died in 1864.

He married Catherine Crawford who passed away in 1871.

The couple’s children included Peter’s great grandfather Duncan. Although Duncan was born in Argyllshire, it would appear the family home was in the Greenock area and four of the couple’s sons — Donald, Hugh, Hector and John — were shipyard workers.

Their daughters Mary and Margaret were married to Duncan McLaughlin and Malcolm Galbraith respectively.

In 1872 Duncan McLean married Jane Arthur, who was born in Greenock in 1854.

Peter has the couple’s ‘Proclamation of Banns for Marriage’ posted at West Parish Church, Greenock.

His great grandparents had five children — Jessie (born 1872), Duncan (1875), William (1876), John (1882) and Jennie (1876).

On an unknown date Duncan and Jane went to America and lived in Newport, Rhode Island.

Peter has no more information about his great grandparents and their children.

However, he hopes that perhaps that relatives of the siblings of his great great grandfather Donald McLean and his wife Catherine Crawford may still live in the area.
