IT’S been said that everyone has a double somewhere in the world.

Greenock reader Frances McCafferty was the double of a world-famous American actress — but only for a few years.

The actress was Shirley Temple, who died earlier this year at the age of 85.

She was best known as a child star when she had distinctive blonde curly hair.

Frances, 78, was around four when people started mentioning she was the spitting image of a young Shirley Temple.

Telegraph photographer James Hall was one of those amazed by the likeness. He invited Frances’s father to bring her to his studio in the Telegraph office across from the McCafferty family home in Charles Street.

The paper carried a story and photograph about Frances’s similarity to the American star.

Frances said: “I only looked like a young Shirley Temple for a few years until my hair changed colour and I lost my curls.” The accompanying picture shows Frances with the photograph taken by James Hall.
