FORGET the FA Cup Final. Forget the SPL championship race.

On Saturday, all the premier footballing action was at Cappielow (apologies to Port Glasgow) for the Morton Fans" Game in association with the Greenock Morton Supporters Trust.

An enthusiastic crowd of over 100 hardy souls turned out amidst overcast skies, the majority cramming themselves into the vacant directors" box as the two teams warmed up on the hallowed turf.

As the sides emerged from the changing rooms, the crowd was advised to keep abuse to a minimum - a rule obeyed for mere minutes before a chorus of "We are Morton" broke out from a lone, discerning voice.

The action itself was end-to-end, Davie Irons" home side opening the scoring when away keeper Chris Gavin could only tip a fierce shot onto the bar, allowing Paul Bryson to nip in and head home.

The second followed immediately, as a borderline-offside Craig Graham was set free down the right to double the lead, the linesman clearly dazzled by the vast array of pastel-coloured footwear on display.

Gavin added his second minutes later, showing clean heels to round the defence and slot home to the goalie"s right, as he looked a certainty to both score a hat-trick and receive the "most valuable ringer" award.

There were goal-line clearances and set-piece chances at either end as the game opened up, and into the second half Derek Collins" away team set out their stall to come back, and were awarded a penalty for a heinous challenge on Ewan Buchanan. A confident Gordon Burns confidently strode up and scooped the ball high into the sky.

Allan Johnston was booked for a stout professional challenge, before Andrew Bowman extended the lead from a corner, then, with time running out, the away team made their mark on the game.

Chris Miller rattled the bar with a fantastic effort, before the ball broke to Mick Smith, whose goal was greeted with a rapturous ovation. However, those fans would have been left wishing he had missed the target, as the larger-than-life number 11 rushed over to the corner flag for a shirtless jig of celebration.

Then, in a maverick move, Collins and Irons connived to sneak their remaining three substitutes on behind the ref"s back, and it was Irons" 14 who scored next, the previously cautioned Johnston rounding the home keeper who, in fairness, had played well to keep the score single-digit.

In the last minute, as home keeper William McKechnie marauded forward to extend the lead, Collins side broke, allowing the dangerous Joseph McMenamin to slot home. In over-zealous celebration, the stand-side linesman was cautioned for elatedly leaping on the player.

The 5-2 scoreline was a moot point, as a fantastic day was had all round, with over 2,500 being raised for Morton Youth Development. Amidst a pitch invasion at the final whistle, Morton manager Davie Irons said: 'It is a great occasion for the support to be able to come and play at Cappielow. The club would benefit from more things like this, it was very well organised and it is great to meet the support, and encourage new fans to come down to the ground.'
