INVERCLYDE AC's Greg Williams got the rewards for his winter season's hard work when he claimed the Under-18s Scottish indoor 800m title in a new personal best.

Greg, right, who has been experiencing both cross country and indoor racing reached the tail end of the season with considerable successes but was striving to lower his time over the half mile.

As he lined up for the heat the arrival of a number of competitors travelling from Ireland ensured the competition was to be very strong. However a tactical race saw Greg cruise through to the final comfortably.

As the final arrived Greg's race plan to take the pace and push on saw him lead into the back straight where all athletes merge onto the inside lane. The tall Inverclyde athlete was increasing the pace to ensure a fast time.

As the athletes approached halfway the noise level of the Irish and Inverclyde support drove Greg on, having the self-confidence to inject more pace. The gap at the front was widening between the chasing pack, unaware of this Greg drove on into the last 200m pushing himself into new territory as he crossed the line victorious recording a new best of 1.57 minutes.

On the same day, speed king Shaun Toner competed over 60m and in the blink of an eye had lowered his best to seven seconds. Shaun followed this up with his second best of the day, this time over 200m as he worked toward the line stopping the clock on 23 seconds.

Evie Semple took part in the Under-16s girls 300m and recorded a very fast 43 seconds, which was a 100th outside her best, to qualify for the final. Unfortunately she suffered an illness and was unable to participate in the final.

In the 60m, Melainie Morgan and Amy McDonald represented the Under-16s and ran close to their bests.

The youngest age groups of the day, Under-14s, Robyn Kelly continued her experience with very fast runs over 60m and 200m In the field events, Jill McGachy equalled her best in the high jump of 1.30m and will look forward to going higher when she takes part outdoor.
