MORTON striker Peter Weatherson's season could be over after he suffered a broken hand in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Raith Rovers, the Tele can reveal.

The 32-year-old was left protecting his left arm after a collision with former Ton team-mate David McGurn in the second half of the match and exited Stark's Park icing the injury.

But a trip to hospital on Monday revealed that Weatherson had fractured a bone in his hand, ruling him out for the next three to four weeks.

Ton assistant Mark McNally told the Tele: "Peter has a spiral fracture which I think is a bit worse than a normal fracture.

"It's a bone in his hand, not a finger, so he's going to be struggling for a couple of weeks anyway.

"He caught [Raith goalkeeper] Davie McGurn's jersey during the match on Saturday, and I think that's how it happened, just maybe by the way he twisted his hand.

"Is his season over? Hopefully not. It's not as if it's a toe or a leg break. But just because it's a spiral fracture rather than a normal fracture it could be worse.

"With a normal fracture he would be out for a couple of weeks anyway. We've got about five weeks of the season to go, so hopefully he'll be back before the end.

"I don't know if we can get a cast or something that would protect it, but I think he's been more or less told not to do anything at all for a couple of weeks then it will be assessed again.

"Speaking to Peter on Tuesday he was very disappointed. It being his testimonial season as well, it couldn't have happened at a worse time.

"Peter's been excellent for us all season. At the beginning of the year he was our only fit striker and helped carry us through that spell, and any time he's come off the bench he's been great.

"He's great to have about the club too. We're just gutted for him that it's happened at this time of the season. But you never know - and hopefully we'll have him back before the end."

McNally and manager Allan Moore travelled back through to Stark's Park on Tuesday night to watch Raith Rovers take on title rivals Partick Thistle ahead of next week's huge Firhill clash. Rovers did Ton a favour by holding Alan Archibald's men to a 0-0 draw to ensure they only stretched their lead at the top to five points rather than seven.

McNally added: "Obviously we've got Thistle next week so we went up to the match and watched them.

"It was a tough game. Raith probably edged it and will feel a bit aggrieved that they never took the three points.

"But as Archie [Partick player-manager Alan Archibald] said in the papers, Thistle actually looked a bit more solid after going down to 10 men. A Thistle win would have made things very difficult, but the draw gives us a chance to hopefully peg them back on Saturday before going into the big game next week.

"Everything is still in Thistle's hands, but there are six games to go, and anything, absolutely anything, can happen in this league."
