PARTICK Thistle manager Alan Archibald insists it is a travesty that there will be no reward for the team that finishes second in this season's title race.

The Scottish First Division has the rare distinction of being one of the only leagues in Europe which offers no prize for the runners up, be that automatic promotion or a play-off spot.

Jags boss Archibald, who refused to discount Morton from being able to overhaul his side at the top, bemoaned the fact that one of the clubs would be left empty handed at the end of the campaign.

He said: "It's not over yet. We'll have to keep winning our games because Morton are a good team and I think they'll keep winning theirs.

"The disappointing thing is that both teams won't go up, or at least get a play-off place, after excellent seasons. There should be a reward for the second-placed team, there's no doubt about it." Morton chief Allan Moore agreed, adding: "The lack of a reward for second place is something I touched on before the game.

"We've got two good teams there with two good supports and there should at least be a play-off, because both teams have put up a good fight.

"But I don't think we're going to make any decision to change it, to be honest. It's got to be the powers that be in the league above us. They make the decisions in this country."
