MORTON winger Bobby Barr has joked that he feels as though he might never score again with the way his form has been in front of goal this season.

The 27-year-old has had an impressive year in what will be his one and only campaign in Ton colours, and currently tops the team’s direct assists chart with seven to his name.

By comparison his goal tally stands at one, scored in a 4-2 win at Livingston on September 5 last year, and he admits it is a side of his game that requires fine tuning.

That being said, Barr was not beating himself up over a missed opportunity against Hibs on Saturday as he felt goalkeeper Mark Oxley had produced a vital save to deflect his shot onto the post.

Speaking exclusively to the Tele, he said: “Saturday was a decent performance and result. We obviously wanted to win the game and were unlucky not to.

“With my chance the boy has misjudged the header and I’ve taken a touch and saw the keeper coming out. So I’ve decided to hit it low under him and it should go in. I didn’t think he [Oxley] saved it at the time and was disappointed, but I watched Sportscene on Sunday night and it’s come off his leg and went onto the post.

“So I think I’ve done everything right and it’s a good save — but that just sums up my luck in front of goal!

“To be fair, I should score more goals, but that just kind of sums it up.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to score again!

“I feel as though I’ve done alright this season to a point and, it’s no big issue, but a few more goals would have been nice.  I’d totally agree that the one element of my game that has been missing has been the goals, and I think if you asked the manager he would say that as well.

“He’s encouraged me when I get in the final third to have a shot, whereas I sometimes look for the pass more often.

“I don’t know what it is — maybe I need to be a wee bit more selfish. It’s something to work on, because I normally chip in with a few goals. This season is probably my poorest return since I started playing. I’m not prolific but always chip in with six, seven, eight goals a season.

“This season it’s just not happened for me in front of goal for whatever reason, but as long as I’m contributing to the team then that’s the main thing.”

After Saturday’s goalless draw, Hibs boss Alan Stubbs criticised Mark Farrell’s Cappielow playing surface. But Barr insisted he had no issues with the pitch and said he would be pleased to play on a surface like it every single week.

He added: “You only have to look at the pitch to see Marky has done a great job. That was our last game of the season on it

“Celtic 20s play on it, Scotland youth and women’s teams train and play on it, the national team trained on it two weeks ago.

“It’s in great nick. Obviously at this time of the season every park - every park — is going to be a wee bit patchy in some areas, like the mainstand side where it gets no sun.

"But it’s no worse than when we went to Easter Road and won 3-0 that night. But that couldn’t be used as excuse because we won 3-0.

“The park on Saturday was better than it was that night, so it’s just a case of clutching at straws a wee bit because it was the same for both sides on Saturday.

“And it’s the first time I’ve heard a manager come down to Cappielow this season and say the surface was poor. I think Mark does a good job on the park, it’s a good surface and I’ve got no issues with it whatsoever. I’d happily play on a surface like Cappielow every week.”
