MORTON’S development squad will jet off to Bulgaria for a fortnight long pre-season training camp next month, the Tele can reveal.

Leaving on Saturday June 4, coaches Andy Millen and Derek Anderson and Under-20s physio Jane Johnston will accompany 16 players on a trip funded by the European Union’s Erasmus Plus Programme.

Over the course of the stay, the squad will combine double training sessions, at both their Varna base and the Sozopol National Sports Complex, with bounce matches and a cultural visit.

Club director Warren Hawke told the Tele: “The Under-20s will be going on an Erasmus Plus, EU-funded exchange visit to Varna in Bulgaria.

“We managed to acquire funding to assist with the costs of the trip and it’s something we’ve been planning for 18 months.

“They leave on June 4 and return on June 17, and the reason we’re doing that is because first-team training starts on June 16, so this will give the young boys two weeks headstart to prepare for pre-season.

“The group will be based in a sports complex and it will be a hard-working holiday for the boys with double sessions most days, but more importantly it gives them a chance to experience other cultures in parts of Europe they may not have visited otherwise.

“We haven’t got a friendly organised yet, but we will look to have one or two bounce matches at the end of the visit, either against local teams or other clubs based within the complex.”
