ROSS Forbes believes finishing fifth in the Championship represented a great season for Morton — but has already set his sights on going one better next term.

A newly-promoted Ton side outstripped expectations by claiming a comfortable mid-table position in a second tier including the likes of Rangers, Hibs, Falkirk and St Mirren.

Midfielder Forbes, who recently penned a new two-year Ton contract, saw last season as a success and says the next step would be to clinch fourth and a promotion play-off place in 2016-17.

He told the Tele: “If you’d have told us at the start of the season that we’d finish fifth after coming up from the league below, we would have taken that.

“You would say: ‘Right that’s fair enough, it’s a great season and we can look to go and build on it again next season’. So we can’t complain.

“That [finishing fifth] was what we were going for in the last few weeks. The play-offs were within touching distance with a few better results, but overall I think it’s been a good season for us.

“A big thing for next season is to improve. There’s no point in keeping playing if you don’t improve and just want to be the same as what you are.

“I’ll be looking to improve personally and as a team and see where it takes us, and if there’s an improvement in league position that would be brilliant.”
