DELIGHTED Jim Duffy said he enjoyed watching his Morton team go about their business in last night’s League Cup success against Clyde.

The Ton boss had described his team’s performance in their drab goalless draw at Albion Rovers at the weekend as unpleasant.

But he saw a big difference between that display and the 1-0 win over the Bully Wee and admitted to being entertained on the sidelines at Cappielow.

That is not to say the 57-year-old was entirely satisfied, however, as he felt his side created enough chances to put more sheen on the scoreline.

He told the Tele: “We thoroughly deserved to win, there’s no doubt about that. I felt that if we had scored another two or three it would have been a fairer reflection of the game.

“The goal took a while to come but we played very well tonight.

“We were positive and were on the front foot from pretty much the first whistle to the last. It was a lot better than it was on Saturday.

“Saturday, as I said, wasn’t very pleasant — but tonight was.

“It was good to watch, I was enjoying it. You know, we passed the ball well — the pitch was terrific so that helps — and as a coach I was
happy.

“It’s another clean sheet so if you’ve got a clean sheet in games you’ve always got a chance in games.

“We could have had one or two goals in the first half. The keeper saved one from Jamie McDonagh, and Gary [Oliver] has had a great header off the bar.

“Another one a free-kick went by the post and Caolan [McAleer] had one cleared off the line. In the second half there weren’t as many goalscoring opportunities but we did play equally as well.

“It’s just that final decision - or like when we cut inside a couple of times and didn’t get enough purchase on the shots.

“Michael Doyle went through and did great but pulled it just wide of the post. We had a couple that went just by the post that looked as if they were going in, Michael Tidser had one too.

“So we had plenty of efforts in and around the goal, and we want to improve on the ratio of chances we are converting.

“We know we’re not the finished article by any stretch of the imagination – we know we’ve still got a lot of young boys - but we played well and deserved the three points.”

The tie was contested in stifling weather conditions, with the heat and humidity asking real questions of the 22 players on show – but Duffy was more than pleased with the way his side coped.

He added: “It was a perfect night, but it was also very, very hot. And for us that’s quite unusual weather down here, so in the last five minutes you could see they were running on empty a bit.

“I mean, we were standing down here [in the dugout area] sweating with the humidity. The weather was freakish, but the players still put in a shift and that was good from our point of view.”

The Cappielow gaffer put his faith in academy products Scott Tiffoney and Lewis Strapp, and he commended their contributions amongst others against Barry Ferguson’s experienced Bully Wee.

Duffy said: “Lewis made his debut on Saturday and did terrific again tonight. He got a wee knock on his knee and was limping a bit.

“But I was always wanting to play Mark Russell in a part of the game anyway, just to get him back into the fold again and get him some game time.

“Caolan did well for us in the wide areas, so did Tiff. They were both positive and gave us that wee bit of pace and directness. I thought Michael Tidser and Ross [Forbes] played really well in the middle of the pitch. Overall, I thought there were a lot of good performances tonight.”
