NEW Morton midfielder Andy Murdoch says he is delighted to be back playing football after being released by boyhood club Rangers at the end of August.

Murdoch spent four years at Ibrox and made a handful of appearances under former boss Stuart McCall before the arrival of Mark Warburton limited his playing time.

He was farmed out on loan to Cowdenbeath and then Queen of the South, before a mutual agreement put an end to his contract with the Gers.

Now Murdoch is hoping to revive his career at Cappielow. He made his first appearance for the club as a substitute in Saturday’s defeat against Dundee United and is eager to prove his worth to Jim Duffy.

Murdoch told the Tele: “I’m just glad to be back involved in football again.

“It feels good.

“My first training session was last Friday and it has been good so far.

“I know a couple of the boys from former teams, they’re good lads. I’ve just come into the team, and I want to do what the manager wants.

“Hopefully I can do that quickly enough but to be honest I’m not looking too far ahead. I’m just wanting to play games and see what happens from there, really.”

Murdoch says that making the move to Ton means he faces some adjustments on the park and he is looking forward to becoming an important part of Duffy’s hard-working squad.

He said: “You can’t really compare Rangers with Morton because it’s a different style of football.

“Rangers are a team that expect a lot of possession-based football and they might be more attacking whereas we are a more organised team, and that works well for us.”

The Paisley-born Ton star has penned a short-term contract and is determined to impress and win an extension that would see him remain in Greenock until the end of the season.

He continued: “I’ve signed until the middle of January.

“Hopefully if I do well I can extend the contract, maybe until the end of the season.

“But it’s not up to me, so we’ll see what happens.”

The 21-year-old has pledged to bring ‘energy in the middle of the park, win tackles and get on the ball’ and hopes to be involved this weekend against Raith Rovers after his brief cameo last weekend at Tannadice.

Murdoch said: “I’m fit, so I’ll see what happens.

“Hopefully I’m involved in some way.

“I’m looking forward to it.”
