MORTON Under-20s last night knocked Ayr United’s teens off their perch at the top of the Development League West, with a 3-0 victory at Cappielow.

A fantastic Jon Scullion hat-trick was the difference as Andy Millen’s youngsters sailed to the top of the table in emphatic style, maintaining their unbeaten start to the new campaign.

The victorious 20s side included several first-team players — Derek Gaston, Scott Tiffoney, Scullion and Andrew Murdoch — as Ton were up against an Ayr side who had a 100 per cent record of their own, having played three and won them all.

United had scored 16 goals without reply in their opening trio of matches, but found themselves a goal down within the first five minutes.

Scullion took aim from just inside the box after an Alex McWaters pass and rifled the ball low into the bottom corner.

It was a top-class strike and the perfect start for his side.

Tiffoney was a menace down the right-hand side all evening for Ton, and picked out Thomas Orr before half-time, but the striker couldn’t keep his header down from inside the six-yard box.

Scullion doubled his tally with a lovely turn and finish to the goalkeeper’s left midway into the second half, and completed his treble with a piece of sublime skill.

The 21-year-old picked up the ball from sub Armour’s pass and danced past two Ayr defenders before slotting the ball into the corner of the net for 3-0.

It was a terrific individual effort from the frontman — who will no doubt be hoping Ton boss Jim Duffy was impressed by his man-of-the-match performance.
