ABERDEEN boss Derek McInnes reckons the best team came out on top after his side ended Morton’s Betfred Cup final hopes on Saturday.

A dogged Ton performance wasn’t enough to see their side through, with goals from Adam Rooney and Kenny McLean wrapping up the victory for Aberdeen - and McInnes believes it was a deserved win for his boys.

He said: “Morton deserve a lot of credit, but my players do too for having the confidence and wherewithal to keep going. The best team won.

“You are judged on games like today. The team is judged on days like today.

“You either deal with the situation or you don’t. We’ve had three League Cup semi-finals in the four years I’ve been here.

“We’ve won two and won one final. The aim is to win this one and make it two.”

McInnes felt his team could have been home and dry early on after Ton withstood a barrage of early Aberdeen chances.

He said: “The first goal was always going to be important. The way we started – one off the bar, one off the line – it looked as if one was coming early on.

“We started like a train and put Morton on the back foot but then they started to gain confidence and got a lift from the fact we hadn’t scored.

“The team I picked to start was the one I thought would win, and I was reluctant to change it. Thankfully it came.

“We said to the players they had no divine right that it would be all about us.

“It’s how you react to a situation when everyone else can start to get a bit edgy. It’s important that you have that composure and trust yourself to get the job done.”

McInnes was back at Hampden Park yesterday to watch Celtic edge past Rangers thanks to a late Moussa Dembele goal, but the Dons gaffer says it doesn’t matter who his side meet in the final - because they will be well prepared.

And 45-year-old McInnes insists his team’s league form should also be recognised.

He said: “Any team can win a cup, and I say that with the greatest respect. A lot of teams can’t do what we’ve done in the league. We’ve sustained a challenge of some sort to Celtic in the last couple of years and regularly had European football.

“I am just concerned about the team we are going to be in the final rather than the one we’ll be facing.
