JIM Duffy was delighted with his side’s professional showing against Beith Juniors in the Scottish Cup — and he praised their mentality after the game.

Morton produced a competent performance against ‘The Mighty’, running out deserved winners with a 6-0 scoreline that didn’t flatter the Greenock outfit.

And boss Duffy says he was proud of his team’s attitude.

He said: “We thought if we could get through the first 10/15 minutes we would then start to settle down and play, we would really express ourselves.

“We scored some terrific goals. Really good goals. And there were one or two chances that we probably should have scored as well, the goalkeeper made a couple of really good saves.

“It was a very tricky tie for us.

“To win as comprehensively as we did and the way we played was really pleasing.

“Beith gave everything, they never stopped chasing us, still trying to get a goal in the last few seconds of the game. But ultimately we showed we had the right mentality.”

Duffy made sure to inform his players of the pitfalls of playing at Bellsdale Park — a ground unlike anywhere many of his players would have seen throughout their young careers thus far.

And he was happy with the way they handled the pressure of playing at a park with a pronounced slope and fans right on top of them.

He said: “We told the younger players throughout the week that we were going to go there and it was going to be a bit of a culture shock, but I think even when people see the slope they think, ‘I wasn’t expecting that’.

“It’s a proper slope and it has a sort of camber as well so it’s very strange, almost like an optical illusion.

“But we adapted to it well and we managed to get the ball down and play.

"If the pitch was longer or cut up or anything like that it might have been a bit more tricky. But it was a good day. The attitude of the players was magnificent.

“We competed even in simple things like tackling, you seen that with Michael Tidser’s goal. It showed that we were there to compete.

“If there was a tackle, we’d tackle. If we could play, we could play.”
