STAR man Gary Oliver hopes that Morton are poised for a rapid double slice of derby delight — after waiting 17 years to taste victory over St
Mirren.

Oliver has billed Hogmanay’s clash of the Renfrewshire rivals as ‘massive’ and says it is ideal that his side have the chance to beat rock bottom Saints again so soon.

Ton defeated the Paisley outfit 3-1 last month thanks to goals from Thomas O’Ware, Ross Forbes and Oliver, with the win putting an end to St Mirren’s long stretch of unbeaten derby dominance.

Oliver is confident of another victory on Saturday — if the away side can maintain the momentum that has carried them into third place in the league.

He told the Tele: “It’s massive.

“In the last couple of weeks especially we’ve been doing really well.

“We just need to carry our form on and I’m sure that will be enough to win the game.”

The frontman joked that the weekend’s fixture should be the starting point for Morton to try and go one better than their
rivals.

He said: “They will no doubt be wanting to get a wee bit of payback and their fans will be wanting the bragging rights back.

“But I think if we play at our capabilities then we will win the game.

“Hopefully we can get 18 years of terror over them and set that record!

“But on a serious note, we’re looking forward to it.”

Oliver says he is well aware that Saints have kicked on since the November game and acknowledges that Jack Ross’s outfit will pose a tougher test this time round.

He said: “St Mirren have definitely improved since the last time we played them.

“They’ve picked up a few points and are much better than they were at the start of the season.

“We know it’s going to be a hard game.

“It won’t be easy, so we’ll need to be on our toes.”

Although it is a derby game, with all the extra baggage that brings, Oliver says the squad will approach Saturday’s showdown in the same focused way as all their other fixtures.

The striker believes that Morton have found a winning formula this season and that there is no need for them to alter the way they prepare for this weekend’s encounter.

He told the Tele: “You don’t want to change too much.

“We’ve been continuing to do what we’ve been doing this week, and if we play at the level we know we can, we’ll be fine.”
