DEREK Gaston believes Morton’s last visit to Somerset Park was their worst performance of the campaign — and he’s aiming to put it right this evening.

Ton fell to United back in September after goals from Paul Cairney and Alan Forrest sealed a 2-1 win for the hosts, with Ross Forbes bagging a consolation goal after Mark Russell had been sent off.

But Gats insists Ton can take pride in their upturn in form since that afternoon and use it to defeat the Honest Men this time around in Ayrshire.

He told the Tele: “Ayr, a bit like ourselves, are better at home than away at the moment. It’s a hard place to go and even teams like Hibs and Dundee United go there and are quite happy to scrape a win.

“When we were there earlier this season it was probably our worst performance in the league, we didn’t deserve anything from the game that day.

“We didn’t start the season too well but we’re going into this game in a lot better form and hopefully we can come away with the right result this time.”

The Morton stopper was delighted with his two clean sheets in a row against tough opposition in Falkirk and Raith Rovers, and he insists his side can continue their fine run of victories — starting with Ayr in tonight’s fixture, which will be screened live on BBC Alba at 5.15pm.

He said: “Most weeks are tough games now. I think last week, especially in the second half, it was quite one-sided in our favour which was really good for us. We would’ve taken a scrappy 1-0 win at the start of the game.

“The fact that we managed to win convincingly, and see out the game fairly comfortably was a bonus.”
