ROSS Forbes believes he can still improve as a footballer this season despite picking up January’s Ladbrokes Championship Player of the Month award.

Forbes scooped the gong after an impressive month where he scored four times and assisted once during Morton’s four consecutive victories over Dumbarton, Raith Rovers, Falkirk and Ayr United.

But the midfielder insists he’s always looking for ways to better himself as an individual and says that his award is recognition of the whole squad’s achievements rather than for his own personal glory.

He said: “It’s always nice to score the goals and get assists, but the most important thing is that there were four wins in January.

“First and foremost it’s all about the team, and long may it continue.

“It’s a confidence playing every week, enjoying my football and enjoying where I’m playing it. I’m coming into a great environment and working with the gaffer and Hagi [Craig McPherson] and that all breeds confidence.

“I know the only way I’ll stay in the team at Morton is by playing well every week, but the gaffer has been a big help since day one.

“If I’m playing on the Saturday it’s always the thought ‘I need to do something here’.

“Maybe I put too much pressure on myself and think I need to score one or two goals to get in the team again next week, but perhaps that’s no bad thing.

“You need to improve things, and you need to be told that sometimes.

“It’s not always a negative and I know there’s still things I need to work on.

“It’s been up to me to do that and I’ll always judge myself, but for Morton I’ve played every game since I’ve been here barring the semi-final that I missed through suspension, so it’s been a good time for me at Cappielow.”

Forbes says the squad always had belief in themselves and says that they could go on to do great things as a collective at Cappielow.

He added: “We always were confident that we had quality and a good team.

“We had a shaky start to the season but we knew we could turn it around, I think that’s been shown recently.”

The midfielder has notched up 10 goals in all competitions so far this season and assisted an impressive 16 times.

While the 27-year-old admits Ton have been unlucky with injuries up front this season, he always knew he’d have to start chipping in with the goals.

He added: “I think there’s a responsibility throughout the whole team to add goals.

“If you look at Tam O’Ware, he’s got nine and from a centre-half position that’s incredible.

“But it has to be shared around the team.

“We’ve been unlucky with strikers getting injured but there’s nothing you can do about that — it just means everyone needs to chip in now and again.”
