MORTON goalkeeper Derek Gaston faces a potential end of season hitch — with his wedding booking abroad clashing with the date of the Premiership play-off final.

The Ton stopper is getting married to fiancée Kristen Fitzsimons this summer, with the ceremony booked for the end of May in the Dominican Republic.

It means that while the ‘keeper will be free for the beginning of the play-offs, if Ton were to make it all the way through to the final then he could be out of the country when it takes place.

Speculation that the 30-year-old would miss the play-offs circulated earlier this month after the club snapped up experienced goalie Bryn Halliwell on a short term deal.

Now that Ton have confirmed their play-off place, Gaston has clarified the situation.

He said: “I’m supposed to be going to the Dominican Republic to get married at the end of May, but obviously I have no idea when our final game will be, so I’ll just need to wait and see.

“When I’d booked it, it was before the fixtures were released.

“Last season, the season finished on the weekend of the 21st of May, the Premiership play-offs finished that weekend.

“But for some reason this season it’s a week later.

“Obviously the fixtures came out, and it being a week later has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works, so we’ll have to wait and see if we get there.

“But as it stands I’ll be available.”

Ton nailed down a top four spot in the table on Saturday with a 1-1 draw with Ayr United at Cappielow and Gaston says he is looking forward to the beginning of the play-offs.

He told the Tele: “I’ll be available for selection and looking forward to the play-offs starting, whether it’s against Falkirk, Dundee United or both. I don’t want to talk about play-off finals or anything like that, we’ll just take every game as it comes and see what happens.”

Popular Gaston has been a Morton stalwart for the last five years and he insists this season has been the best campaign he’s enjoyed since he joined the Greenock men back in 2012.

He said: “This probably ranks up there with the best achievement.

“The first year I was here we pushed Partick Thistle all the way to try and get to the Premiership, but at that point there was no play-offs and we were a wee bit unfortunate because we would’ve had a good chance to do well in them that year.

“We were a good bit ahead of the team in third.

“But the league maybe wasn’t as strong back then either, there weren’t as many so-called bigger teams in the league.

“I think the fact that we’ve managed to mix it with some really good teams this season puts it up there with one of the best seasons I’ve had in the last five years.”
