ROBERT Thomson has rubbished the thought of a walkover on Saturday afternoon after Edinburgh City pushed Premiership side Motherwell to their limits on Tuesday night.

City led the Steelmen before eventually falling late on to Stephen Robinson’s team, and Thomson was impressed by the League Two side’s mettle.

Which is why the ex-Dumbarton striker won’t be taking anything for granted against the part-timers this weekend at Cappielow.

But Thomson insists Saturday’s home clash in the Betfred Cup is the perfect chance for his team to put last weekend’s defeat against Well behind them — and get himself off and running for the season with his first competitive strike
for the Ton.

He told the Tele: “Obviously it’s good that there’s another game coming around so quickly and I’ll try and get myself on the scoresheet, but I don’t think it’s any different from any of the other games.

“Edinburgh City were leading Motherwell in their game on Tuesday night and that was a close call, so they’ll be a good team.

“I wouldn’t go and say that we will run away with it, it’ll be a close game, and it’s just another opportunity for me to try and get on the scoresheet and get the three points to see where that leaves us in the group.

“Last weekend obviously wasn’t ideal with the result and then there was the Queen’s Park game before that.

“We showed a good bit of character to go and get back into that Queen’s game and take it to penalties but I think, throughout the game, we had the chances to win and we should have done better.

“It’s always different going from pre-season games into something with a competitive edge. But hopefully this will stand us in good stead for the league starting.

“Last weekend it was difficult for us from the outset going there because they’re an established Premiership team.

“Circumstances in the game, going down to 10 men, also made it even more difficult.

“But I think we always knew it was going to be hard going, that’s what it was always going to be.”

Thomson missed the opening game of Ton’s Betfred Cup journey this season against Berwick Rangers thanks to a minor chest procedure, and the forward said: “I had it on the Friday for my chest and it was as a precaution that I missed the Berwick game.”

When asked if it was an issue that could potentially rear its head again, Thomson replied: “Nah, nothing like that, no.”
