BOB McHugh insists his side will be looking to break down Dumbarton at Cappielow this weekend with their attacking players — but will have to stay solid at the back to avoid Sons’ counter-attacks.

It took Ton until the 81st minute against Brechin to batter the doors down at Glebe Park before eventually winning the game thanks to an Andy Murdoch strike.

And McHugh believes they are in for an equally difficult game on Saturday against Stevie Aitken’s outfit, who are well known for their organisation and concentration.

But McHugh maintains that Morton have shown they have it in them to break down teams like Dumbarton and says they’ll have to do so again in order to earn their second Championship win in a row.

He told the Tele: “We’re looking towards the Dumbarton game now.

“The three points is what we want. We know it is a very decent Dumbarton side who have improved since the last year or so, they’ve got some good players there.

“It’s obviously another tough game just as every game is now in this division. We’ll try our best to break them down as best we can but we won’t be forgetting that Dumbarton have enough quality going forward as well.

“But at Cappielow we’ll be looking for the three points against anyone.

“We showed we have the patience to break teams down last week and it’ll be just the same thing again on Saturday.”

Looking back at the Brechin clash last weekend, McHugh admits that it was always going to take either a wonder-strike from 30 yards, a tap in or a bit of luck.

Murdoch’s squirming effort from the edge of the box proved to be the match-winner but McHugh says he’d take scrappy goals like that every single weekend if it meant Morton would be pushing for a play-off spot like last season.

He said: “We went up there knowing it was going to be a tough game with very little space, so to come away with the three points was the most important thing.

"It was one of those games where if you don’t get an early goal the opposition have something to hang on to. And it felt at times like they were really holding out for the draw.

“But Andy Murdoch will be delighted with his goal. You take the goals the way they come and we’re delighted for him.

“You start to think that sort of game is going to either take a belter of a goal or a scrappy one.

“You hope for a wee bit of luck and fortunately we got that wee bit of luck. I think we deserved it.”
