JIM Duffy insists he was delighted with his players on Saturday - despite only managing a point against visitors Dumbarton at Cappielow.

Mark Stewart gave the Sons an early lead inside five minutes with a scrappy goal before Bob McHugh rescued the point in the second half.

However Morton will be wondering how on earth they weren't able to come away with the victory after dominating proceedings for the vast majority of the afternoon.

But Duffy says he was more than satisfied with the performance from his players because they showed throughout the Championship fixture that they were the side most likely to take all three points.

He said: “We lost an early goal and that’s always difficult against a team as organised as Dumbarton because they can then sit back, allow you the ball in your own half and nullify the space. That’s what they did for large parts of the game.

“They know their jobs and are very effective. We had to be patient.

“But to be honest with you I was delighted with the attitude of the players, they shrugged it off quite quickly and really went to try and win the game. I think we were unlucky not to win it because even before we got the equaliser we really tried to move the ball.

“We made some errors as you do in any game of football but in terms of application and desire to win the game I have no complaints whatsoever.

“Dumbarton defended resolutely, their keeper had one or two good saves and on another day one of those blocks or ricochets fall for you, they didn’t for us. But I wasn’t too disappointed with the performance.”

Duffy admits he was happy with the amount of chances his players created and reckons the goal scored by striker McHugh was ‘outstanding’.

He added: “We had loads of pressure and corners. And we had to defend situations as well. But in terms of general play we really controlled most of it.

“I thought we scored an outstanding goal, played some great football. It was a great finish and on another day with shots and opportunities, we could have won it.

“I’m only really unhappy with two things. One was the goal we lost because we got caught on the counter-attack and that shouldn’t happen. And two was the fact that we didn’t take all three points.”
