MORTON manager Ray McKinnon says he’ll be looking to experiment with his new-look side during the Betfred Cup group stages.

The competition kicks off for the Ton today at Somerset Park where they take on Ayr United.

They then face Partick Thistle away on Tuesday night, before hosting Albion Rovers and Stenhousemuir.

Morton have had three pre-season friendly games so far, picking up two wins and a draw.

The Ton have lined up with a 4-3-3 formation for the majority of the three matches, but McKinnon says he will consider adapting his system in their group games as he looks to get the best out of his team.

He told the Tele: “We want to do well in it but it’s still an opportunity for us to keep growing in fitness and it still gives me an opportunity to look at different things.

“I might even look at using another system over the next three or four games because I’m trying to figure out what my best formation is for my team this season.

“I’m open to looking at all different possibilities.”

There are eight groups in total, with each group winner making it into the last 16, while four of the best runners up also progress, and are then joined by Celtic, Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibernian, who are all in European action this month.
