CHARLIE Telfer says the football Morton have produced at times in their Betfred Cup group section is some of the most enjoyable he’s ever played in his entire career.

Despite not getting a result against Partick Thistle last Tuesday, the Ton took many plaudits for the way they passed the ball and dominated the game in the second period, being edged out 2-1 at Firhill.

There were glimpses of that performance again on Saturday against Stenhousemuir, with goals from Ross MacLean and Bob McHugh sealing a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Despite the large player turnover in the summer at Cappielow, the midfielder, who has previously played under manager Ray McKinnon at Dundee United, says the side are gelling well.

He told the Tele: “The way we played against Partick, most of the boys said that was one of the most enjoyable games we have ever played in.

“It just worked, playing in the 4-3-3 just clicked for us and I felt there were times on Saturday that it worked for us again.

“If we just take that into games and keep playing the same way in the league I think it will work for us.

“We now know what we’re capable of, which the gaffer wouldn’t have expected this early on, but we’ve set that standard now and we need to maintain it.

“It seems like the squad is gelling quite well. I’ve been at squads where there has been large turnovers and where it’s not worked as well.

“Everybody knows what everyone wants, everyone wants to win and if you’ve got that then it’s always going to work well.”

The midfielder has been an integral part of McKinnon’s squad so far, playing in several positions across the park.

He’s slotted in at centre-midfield, as well as in the number 10 role just behind the striker.

But it’s been out on the wings where he’s been most utilised so far in the opening three games of the campaign.

While unfamiliar with the role, Telfer says he’s beginning to enjoy the position.

He added: “I never really expected to be put out onto the wing, but for me it’s not really about playing wide like Ross MacLean, he’s a bit different, a bit more direct, whereas I’m trying to find more areas.

“I enjoyed it, and I like getting forward and getting involved in that side of the game.”

Telfer played previously for McKinnon at Dundee United for two seasons, before having a stint at Dutch side Almere City last campaign.

After his period abroad, where he spent a large part of the year injured, and only featured for the first team 10 times while in the Netherlands, Telfer is glad to be back in familiar surroundings in Scotland under McKinnon.

He said: “It’s good being back under Ray, he knows how I play and I know what he’s like as a manager, we know what we’re getting from each other.

“I know what to expect from him as do the other players and so far everyone seems to be enjoying it.

“He is very clear on the training pitch with what he wants and what standard he wants.”
