ROSS MacLean says there was a sense of déjà vu after scoring his first Morton goal on Saturday.

The Motherwell loanee rounded opposition goalkeeper Graeme Smith after 34 minutes to open the scoring at Cappielow, with the home side eventually going on to win 2-0.

MacLean revealed it was an almost carbon copy of his first and only other professional goal, for Motherwell, last season.

The 21-year-old scored his only previous strike with a dramatic late winner last year for the Well against Ross County in the League Cup in extra-time.

He rounded County goalkeeper Scott Fox to seal a quarter-final spot after 112 minutes in Dingwall, with Motherwell also down to 10 men at that point.

He told the Tele: “You want to score on your home debut in front of the home crowd, and get the crowd on your side. I was happy to get my first goal.

“I’ve scored one goal for Motherwell and it was exactly the same as that one.

“Going round the goalkeeper, I managed to keep my composure again.

“The goalkeeper always thinks you’re going to shoot, so I took it round to the side.”

It was Morton’s first win of the season on Saturday, after losing their first two games against Ayr United and Partick Thistle.

MacLean felt his side were unlucky in their opening ties of the Betfred Cup group games, and that it was only a matter of time before Ray McKinnon’s side secured their first competitive victory of the season.

He added: “We’ve been very unlucky with the last two results. I felt against Partick Thistle we battered them in the second half and in the first half it was even, and even with Ayr United it was just the last 20 minutes of the game that let us down.

“It was always coming and it was good to get the first win and hopefully we can carry the momentum through to Saturday and into the league after that.”

The winger moved on loan to secure more game time, after being frustrated about not featuring as much as he would have liked for Stephen Robinson’s side, but he’s been getting plenty of minutes so far for the Ton.

Up until being subbed in Saturday’s game against Stenny, MacLean had played every minute of the Championship side’s pre-season and League Cup campaign.

The winger said on a personal note it was great to get more minutes on the park.

He said: “Coming off on Saturday was the first rest I’ve had so far in the pre-season and the League Cup.

“I’ve played five or six games in a row and my legs are feeling very heavy, that’s five games in around two weeks, so it’s good to get a wee rest this week, as we’ve got no game tonight.

“Hopefully we’ll freshen up and then come again on Saturday against Albion Rovers.”
