MORTON manager Ray McKinnon says he was impressed with front duo Bob McHugh and Ross MacLean’s finishing on Saturday.

The pair’s first-half strikes helped Ton comfortably see off Stenhousemuir at Cappielow to secure their first competitive win of the season.

McHugh had an operation on his troublesome groin injury over the summer, after playing through the pain barrier for the majority of the campaign last season.

For MacLean, it was only his second professional goal, and the manager was impressed with both players for different reasons.

He told the Tele: “They were good goals. I thought Bob McHugh did well, he’s come back early so he’s behind schedule in training and he’s had to work extremely hard after having an operation over the summer.

“Ross MacLean has played every minute of every pre-season game so far and he was just shattered, and there were a few of them. Lee Kilday didn’t play much at all last year, it’s been a tough week for them but it was all good on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, the manager says he will continue to monitor the fitness of Gregor Buchanan, after the defender was substituted on Saturday.

The centre-back took a heavy knock from a tackle late on in the game, but McKinnon wasn’t too worried, with the Championship season starting in just under two weeks time at home to Queen of the South.

He added: “He took a kick on his shin, he’ll hopefully be fine as he’s got two weeks [to recover].”
