MORTON goalkeeper Derek Gaston says he is raring to go again and reclaim his starting spot after overcoming his wrist injury.

The Ton shotstopper was given the all-clear by doctors recently after finally recovering from his broken wrist.

The 31-year-old had suffered a setback in his recovery bid as the bone had not fully healed.

The goalkeeper has been on the bench for the last few Betfred Cup games and he’s keen to get back out on the pitch again today against Albion Rovers.

He told the Tele: “The wrist is good. It’s two weeks since I got the all-clear and my wrist is fully healed now and I’ve been able to do the goalkeeping side of things.

“I had been able to do all the running, so I wasn’t behind in terms of my fitness, it’s just about getting the hand-eye co-ordination back and it’s starting to come back now and I’m starting to feel like my usual self again.

“When it happened I didn’t know it was broken so I didn’t expect to be out for so long at all. I thought once I was out of the cast I would be ready to go again, and then I had another setback as it hadn’t properly healed and it was another four weeks out.

“When a new manager comes in you’re keen to impress from the get go and I was unable to get the gloves on and it was getting frustrating, but it’s passed now and I’m ready to go again.”

Ton’s opponents today Albion Rovers have had a tough time in this year’s League Cup group, losing all three games so far without scoring a goal. After being relegated to League Two, the club are going through a similar overhaul to Morton in terms of changes in players and backroom staff.

It’s a club that holds a place close to Gaston’s heart, being his only previous team before joining Morton back 2012.

The Ton goalkeeper made over 70 appearances for the Coatbridge side, helping them earn promotion to the old Second Division in 2011, and he hopes he can return to the starting line-up against his former side.

He added: “I took a wee walk down the other night to watch their game, and I still try and go up when I get some time off and to take in a game. There are a lot of nice people involved in the club, all the players at the club have moved on since I was there six or seven years ago.

“I have a lot of fond memories from when I was playing with Albion Rovers, and it was quite a successful time when I was there.

“I still look out for their scores and how they get on, who they sign and things like that. I’m a local boy so you still see people out when you’re around shopping, and you speak to fans and they’ve always got nice things to say so I’ve got a lot of time for the club.

“I’d like to start today against them. I’ve not played for three months so I need to get a game or two under my belt and we’ll see what happens from there.

“I’ll try and impress the manager in training and any game I do play in and we’ll take it from there.”
