MORTON manager Ray McKinnon says he will ring the changes against Dumbarton tonight.

The Ton head across the Erskine Bridge this evening to face the Sons in the Irn Bru Cup.

With no further games for the Ton for just under two weeks, with Betfred Cup last 16 ties being played this weekend, it gives the Cappielow boss a chance to change his starting 11.

A number of players are coming back from injury, and McKinnon sees it as the perfect opportunity to give some players more game time.

He said: “We’ll keep it nice and light and we’ve got almost two weeks until our next game against Ross County.

“We’ll use the Dumbarton game to get as much fitness to as many people as we can, Robert Thomson, inset, and anyone like that, anybody who did not play on Saturday, will play against Dumbarton.

“We want to really utilise the squad for the Dumbarton game.”

The former Dundee United boss was also delighted with his side’s resilient performance, securing his first league win as Ton boss, with a 2-0 victory over Alloa on Saturday.

He added: “Alloa will be a tough place to come and get all three points this season.

“Jim Goodwin’s put together a really good side and I thought they played well, so I’m delighted to walk away with the three points.

“Last week we were 2-0 up against Queen of the South, and it’s a new team that we’ve only put together recently and maybe the understanding wasn’t there. We got caught on the counter-attack last week.

“On Saturday we got our goal, we were a bit more resilient, there were a lot of balls coming into the box from Alloa and they dealt with it well and it will help build confidence.

“They did well and they should probably have kicked on.

“We spoke at half-time not to concede and we had to work hard and the guys did that, and they kept their shape really well and they had to defend on numerous occasions as Alloa played well.”

One player who was particularly put under a lot of pressure was Reghan Tumilty with a lot of Alloa’s play coming down the left flank.

It meant the right-back had to work overtime to cover his position on Saturday, and the manager praised the 21-year-old’s display.

He said: “They’ve got a really good out ball in their left winger Jake Hastie.

“He’s big, strong and direct and they were using that tactic, the diagonal, for most of the game, he was very effective.

“I said to Reghan after the game it was a really tough afternoon for him, as he was defending quite a lot of those balls, but he did well and like I said this will be an extremely tough place to come for anybody.”

If Morton get past Dumbarton tonight, they will learn their second-round opponents on Thursday when the draw is made at 1pm. It will be streamed live on the SPFL Facebook page.
