WELCOME to my regular column in the Greenock Telegraph.

It’s been a busy few weeks and with Sergio Garcia finally winning his first major, golfers all over the world are happy.

What a fantastic spectacle we all enjoyed from Augusta with one of the best back nines in a major being played out between European Ryder Cup partners Sergio and Justin Rose.

Seeing them trade birdies, pars and eagles was a joy to watch and let’s hope this sets us up for a good season in all the majors.

The golf season gets competitive in and around Inverclyde now with medals and match-play competitions all beginning to place.

One of the questions I always get asked is what type of golf do I prefer: match-play or stroke-play.

My upbringing at the nine-hole course in Greenock taught me to become a good stroke-play player with the par 32 course being a great learning curve and this is what stood Chris Doak and I in good stead as we became professional golfers.

Junior golf is at the forefront of what I do and this week junior academies commence at Gourock and Whinhill golf clubs.

Now is the time to get your children into golf so get in touch with myself or Gary Havlin at Whinhill to register your son or daughter.
