GREENOCK Glenpark Harrier Meighan McDade delivered the performance her training deserved with a stunning run to finish top local junior at this year"s National Cross Country Championships at Falkirk"s Callander Park.

It was a mature performance way beyond her years.

Lying 30th in the early stages, she kept her cool and gradually picked her way through the field, making big gains on the energy-snapping hill sections. By halfway on the two-mile course she had moved up to 18th. Meighan maintained her pace, gaining with every stride to finish in a fantastic eighth place overall.

Team-mate Shannon Kangley was also running strongly, only to twist an ankle during a downhill section at halfway. With team places in mind she battled on through the pain to finish 31st.

Team captain Gabrielle Fisher led by example, pushing the pace extremely hard from the gun. She was closely followed by Rebecca McDiarmid and Louisa Davies.

Rebecca proved to be strongest on the day, breaking clear, but with less than 20 seconds separating the trio. The spirit displayed by the under-13 girls was rewarded with 10th place in the team competition.
