AT the inaugural Scottish Athletics Inter-Regional Track and Field Championships at Wishaw on Sunday, Inverclyde AC had a number of seniors taking part for the victorious West Coast team.
Top performer for the club was last week"s Chisholm sub four-minute mile winner Chris MacKay. He finished second in the senior men"s 1500m A race, clocking a time of 3.48.87.
MacKay was just edged out for first place by Central"s Alastair Hay who reversed last week"s mile second place, clocking a winning time of 3.48.67.
MacKay, also running as a guest, finished second in the senior men"s 800m A race behind Colin McCourt of Tayside and Fife in 1.52.63. McCourt"s winning time was 1.52.01, with Alastair Hay of Central third in 1.52.88.
The club"s Kevin Kane, running as a guest, also finished fifth in this event in a time of 1.54.01. In the senior men"s B 1500m race, Mark Pollard for the West Coast team also had to settle for second in 3.55.71, behind Dougie Selman of the east team who clocked a winning time of 3.52.15.
In the men"s B 800m race Mark Pollard also finished fifth for the west team in a time of 1.57.99.
Andrew Campbell, also running as a guest, had a good run to finish seventh in 1.59.23. The race winner was Central"s Garry Smith in 1.53.45.
Guest athlete Craig Ruddy also finished fifth in the men"s 5000m in a time of 15.12.30. Winner was the West City"s Tsegai Tewelde in 14.26.32.
In the men"s A 5000m race, West City also took the honours, with Amanuel Hagos taking the win from the West Coast"s Derek Hawkins. Hagos clocked a time of 14.23.78, with Hawkins in 14.39.74. The West Coast took the inaugural title with 467 points from West City on 430, with Tayside & Fife third with 383 points.
In the women"s race Kilbarchan"s Elspeth Curran, another who trains locally, finished second in 17.49, also a new personal best time.
The next event for some of the club"s seniors will probably be the Polaroid Helensburgh 10K on Thursday 21 May.
