TOUGH GOING: Andy McCall who had his work cut out to win Harris Trophy.

Andy McCall was made to work hard all the way for his victory in Greenock Glenpark Harriers' Harris Trophy race around the four laps of Coves Reservoirs.

In perfect conditions the pre-race favourite immediately made his way to the front, but he was quickly followed by Stevie McLoone and David Henderson.

McLoone briefly took the lead, as the trio stayed locked together after the first lap of the 1.4 mile undulating path, but a sustained effort by McCall pulled him 40 metres clear on lap two, with McLoone gaining the same distance on Henderson.

This was how it remained until the final lap, when the chasing two went all out to catch McCall. McLoone had started to make slight inroads on the lead, but it was Henderson who came storming past McLoone with 400 metres remaining, to take the runners-up spot. Seventeen-year-old Emily Pollock comfortably won the women's event to become the race's youngest ever winner, from Terry Wall.

Top in the age group categories were Ernie Currie +50, Richard Hodelet +60 and Jim Sheridan +70, with Sam McVicar taking the John Russell trophy in the handicap competition.

Running alongside their older clubmates were 16 Glenpark youngsters. In the under-13 one-lap race, Lauren Mulaghton was outright winner just ahead of Michael O'Rourke. Gerard Smith and Shannon Kangley took top honours in the two-lap race, with the improving Andy Fisher fastest under-17.

A special thanks goes to all the volunteers for stewarding and time-keeping and to race sponsor, painter and decorator Alex Cameron.
