TALENTED athlete Sarah Glenny put in a storming performance at a major sporting event despite tough weather conditions.
The 15-year-old Gourock High pupil competed in the individual 300m event at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games at the weekend and finished sixth overall, in a time of 41.3 seconds.
This was 0.24 seconds outside her personal best but still impressive given she was forced to run into a strong headwind.
The race was exceptionally fast, and was won by an athlete already selected to compete at this year’s Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Sarah, right, also competed in the 4x300 relay, running the first leg, and battling hard to hand the baton over within the top three. The team finished fourth, just outside the medals.
Sarah had been selected to represent Scotland in the competition, held at the Gateshead International Stadium.
She said: “The UK School Games were just like what I imagined athletes at the major competitions experience.
“We were treated like real stars. Wearing my Scotland kit and identification badge made me feel really proud.
“This was my second event with a Scotland squad and having Inverclyde Athletics coach Janice Hendrie as team manager at both helped me relax and really enjoy the experience.”
Sarah’s favourite moment was being formally introduced on the track and hearing her name and Gourock High School blasted out from the stadium speakers.
The Sainsbury’s UK School Games - which will be televised next weekend - is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age.
As well as athletics, the sports programme included cycling, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, judo, swimming, table tennis and volleyball, giving a total of 10 sports.
