Late goal costs victory
Hillhead 1-1 Greenock 2nd XI
THE Greenock Ladies 2nd XI team are back in action, having re-commenced the second half of the hockey season against Hillhead at Windyedge.
With a few players unavailable due to illness, Greenock tried out a new starting line-up and what they may have lacked in experience was made up with sheer determination and enthusiasm.
Greenock continually pressed forward from the start, keeping the more mature Hillhead defence busy.
However luck was not on their side, and several shots went wide of the mark.
Greenock continued to create chances with some fabulous passing play between Gillian Finch, Julia Baldwin, Caitlin Calder and Olivia Finch and eventually were rewarded with a goal by Caitlin from a slip pass across the front of the Hillhead goal, giving Greenock a 1-0 lead into half time.
Greenock didn't have it all their own way, and Hillhead's style of attacking play, particularly in the second half, kept Greenock midfielders Laura Atkinson, Erin and Olivia Cain busy.
The game was very much end to end, with both teams attacking for goals and Greenock youngsters Stephanie Blyth and Anna Barrie were unlucky not to score from passes across the front of Hillhead's goal.
Tiredness took its toll and within the last 10 minutes of the game Hillhead seemed to continually harass the Greenock defence who despite their best efforts were unable to clear their lines for any length of time. Greenock's Hannah McKay however certainly made Hillhead's left forward work hard in her efforts to move the game forward.
Hillhead's pressure was eventually rewarded with five minutes of the game remaining when a shot across the front of the goal was cleared onto the stick of their centre forward who slammed the ball into the right hand corner of the goal, levelling the score at 1-1 and this remained the final score.
Congratulations to players of the match, Julie Baldwin, Laura Atkinson and Hannah McKay and to Julia who was also voted opposition player of the match.
l Thanks to umpire Jimmy Lepick and also sponsors 20-20 Renewables and Texas Instruments for their continued support. Greenock are back in action next week at home against Loch Lomond.
