EUROPEAN bronze medallist Chris O’Hare is set to attend Inverclyde’s Dream Mile event at Ravenscraig Stadium tomorrow.

The on-form middle-distance runner will support the junior and senior athletes taking part in a series of Dream Miles.

The visit comes two weeks after Chris produced a sensational finish to win bronze for Great Britain in the 1,500m at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich.

It was the first British medal at that distance since Steve Cram and Seb Coe in 1986.

Prior to that, the 23-year-old from West Linton starred for Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. The University of Tulsa graduate finished sixth in the 1,500m on the track at Hampden.

The Dream Mile event is being organised by the Inverclyde Local Athletic Partnership with the charity Dreams Come True to introduce this new annual event on the local athletics calendar.

The Dream Mile event will involve 10 one-mile track races for adult men and one for women, as well as for the younger age groups of under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 with separate events for boys and girls. Anyone is free to enter their relevant race on the day.

Thereafter, there will also be a special Morton Mile with members of the first team, club officials and Morton’s under-11 and under-12 Academy children.

After all the competitive races with special medals to win, there will be a Dream Mile walk/run for all ages.

For this event people of all ages are invited to take part by walking one mile on the track and it is hoped many will come in costume to join Mickey and Minnie Mouse as well as Zoomin the Zebra and take part. There will be a prize for the most colourful and interesting costume.

Gerry Gaffney, chairman of ILAP, said: “We got thinking about introducing this special event which is open to all after discussing ways of helping this great local charity.

“We are aware of the sterling work they do to make dreams happen for younger people with great success and it will be great to raise funds for them to make more dreams come true, as well as having a very enjoyable afternoon in the refurbished Ravenscraig Stadium.” The event is being sponsored by Inverclyde Leisure and it costs £2 per person to enter a race and £2 for spectators, who will each receive a cup of tea or coffee and a cake within the price.

Information about the Dreams Come True charity will be available as well as the chance to nominate local children and young people to receive their own dream.

Dreams Come True exists to help children and young people aged between two and 21 who are terminally or seriously ill.

Chris Jewell, local co-ordinator for Dreams Come True said: “We are very keen to make more and more dreams come true here in Inverclyde and we are very grateful to ILAP and Gerry for making this new event happen which will become a regular event.

“We would encourage everyone to come along and support this special occasion.”
