CAMERON Borgas is set to be handed the captaincy as he makes his home Greenock debut tomorrow.
The Glenpark side, still searching for their first win of the campaign, entertain Ayr in what has the unexpected look of a basement battle.
International commitments mean that Greenock are once again without several key performers including skipper Craig Wright.
The veteran all-rounder is on Saltires duty with Dewald Nel and Richie Berrington as the national side step-up their preparations for next month"s Twenty20 World Cup.
Wright"s absence along with vice-captain Berrington means that Aussie professional Borgas is likely to lead the side in what is already a must-win game for Greenock.
President David Campbell declared: 'Cameron has only been at the club a few weeks and so maybe doesn"t know the boys as well he might but he has bags of top flight experience.
'I think he will be the logical choice to captain the team in Craig"s absence.'
Last weekend"s surprise defeat against Aberdeenshire at Mannofield came on the back of a home loss to Grange when the Greenock team was again badly depleted.
These reverses have left the Glenpark men marooned in bottom place while Ayr, who have lost all four of their games, are in second bottom spot by dint of having picked up two bonus points.
However, a win on Saturday could see Greenock move several places up the table and kick-start a campaign which has stuttered into action. Campbell added: 'We always knew we were going to be hurt by Scotland call-ups but last week"s defeat at Aberdeenshire was unexpected.
'In fairness Aberdeen played well but our problem was that Richie and Cameron didn"t get any runs and it put a lot of pressure on others.
'However, there were plusses and we must take confidence from these going into the Ayr game.'
The contributions of the Hempsey brothers, Jonny and Chris, were among the positives with the former taking four wickets and the latter digging in with the bat as Wright attempted to save the game.
Campbell said: 'It is not all doom and gloom and if Shailesh (Prabhu) hadn"t got a debatable decision at an important stage it might have been a different story.'
Nor is it all negative on the team selection front with former Durham leg-spinner Moneeb Iqbal, who missed the Aberdeen trip, likely to return along with Dougie Wylie and Ryan Begley.
Ayr, meanwhile, will rely on the batting prowess of former New Zealand international Michael Papps as they attempt to break their own duck.
