Rain halts Greenock victory hope

RUSTRATED Greenock president David Camp-bell looked back on the first sodden Saturday of the SNCL top flight campaign and admitted: "It just about summed up our season."

Campbell's men had produced one of their most sterling batting displays of the year against champions Aberdeenshire — only for the elements to intervene shortly after the halfway stage at Glenpark.

Willie Rowan struck a superb 93 and Andy Hislop 36 to propel the hosts towards 235 for seven.

When the curtain came down, the Dons had responded with 19 without loss in six overs.

DOWNPOUR: Rain stopped play.

Campbell said: "It was just typical that the weather should rule the roost at that particular time.

"Why couldn't it have come on the days we couldn't even reach three figures?

"Willie batted really well and showed why he is being deployed up the order.

"He and Andy put on 94 for the first wicket, which provided a platform from which we could well have gone on to get a victory. It has been a difficult season for us and this outcome summed up our fortunes."

Greenock now turn their attention to this weekend's home tussle with Carlton, who have gone off the boil after free-scoring start to their title quest.
