EFFORT: Kevin McLaren top scored for Grenock.

GREENOCK are almost certainly doomed to finish the season with the wooden spoon after going down to second bottom West of Scotland in a hard-fought contest at Glenpark on Saturday.

The home side went into this clash with high hopes of adding to their earlier success against West back in June.

However, their failure to put a substantial total on the board once again proved their undoing.

There was no repeat of the batting collapses that three times have seen Greenock fail to reach three figures this term.

However, their inability to put together meaningful partnerships restricted them to 177-9.

In the event it was left to skipper Kevin McLaren to hold things together with a battling half-century.

The visiting bowlers, meanwhile, were rewarded for no more than producing a good line and length.

The Partick side's batsmen were given a helping hand by the home side who, having reduced their rivals to 77-5, were unable to press home their advantage.

Greenock have three difficult fixtures left against Forfarshire, Dunfermline and Uddingston.
