A MAGNIFICENT performance saw Morton stun Hibs in Edinburgh tonight to claim a brilliant three points and move up to fifth place in the Championship.

All the talk before the game had been of the home side - who were unbeaten in 14 league games, had not lost at home all season, are into the League Cup final and had just knocked rivals Hearts out of the Scottish Cup.

Alan Stubbs could also afford the luxury of making several changes, reintroducing stars John McGinn, Anthony Stokes and Jason Cummings to his lineup.

Meanwhile Ton could not even list a full subs bench, while Ricki Lamie and Stef McCluskey were included despite not being 100 per cent fit.

But on a night when Hibs were expected to narrow the gap on Rangers at the top they were dismantled by an heroic performance from Jim Duffy's men, who until tonight had not beaten any of the top four this term.

They had to withstand early pressure but grew into the game and then shocked Hibs in the 36th minute when Tam O'Ware headed home the opener from a Ross Forbes corner.

They made it to half time with the lead intact and soon they were celebrating again, Denny Johnstone knocking the ball home on 51 minutes after a blunder by home keeper Mark Oxley.

Not even the loss of Conor Pepper - stretchered off with a knee injury - could deter Ton.

They scored a tremendous third goal just after the hour mark when Bobby Barr sprinted the length of the pitch on a rapid counter attack and then teed up Ross Forbes to send the travelling support into dreamland.

Ton not only saw the game out comfortably, they could have added more goals with Declan McManus, twice, and Joe McKee coming close.

As Easter Road emptied of over 8,000 home supporters it was left to the sweat soaked Ton players to celebrate with their fans.

They are now just one point off the promotion play offs and will go into the next four games, all away from home, in fine fettle.
