MORTON star Jai Quitongo has signed a new contract which commits him to the club until June 2018.

The news comes as a big boost to the club after the hot prospect attracted attention from English clubs following his scintillating form in the first half of the season.

Quitongo sustained a serious knee injury in December and has been out of action since, having undergone surgery.

The striker joined Ton in 2015 and after a successful grounding in the Under-20s he made his first team breakthrough last season.

He established himself as a first pick with a rapid rise to prominence at the beginning of this campaign, netting six goals and drawing rave reviews from scouts and adulation from supporters.

The 19-year-old has also earned his first Scotland Under-21 cap, appearing against Slovakia in November.

His Ton deal was due to expire at the end of the season and boss Jim Duffy says he is 'absolutely delighted' the player has decided to stay beyond then

Duffy said: “He’s a potentially outstanding talent and we’re thrilled that Jai and the club have come to an agreement to have him stay. There was obviously a lot of speculation surrounding the boy just before he got injured.

“He’s only really had about 20 first-team starts, so he maybe thinks it’s in his interests as well to get a bit more experience, and if he keeps developing and working hard he may get that move further down the line.

“But I think for everybody at this moment in time, the most important thing was that Jai wanted to sign and we were keen to get it done, so we’re delighted to get it over the line.”
