ON THE BAWL: James Grady.

JAMES GRADY has backed his players to shake off the pain of losing to Airdrie United on Saturday and get back on track in what has become a vital clash with Ayr United tonight.

The Morton manager, pictured, watched as goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert, right, saw red, with his side conceding three penalties during a morale-sapping loss in Lanarkshire.

However, Grady was content with the overall display of his players and maintained that his side possess greater quality than Ayr, who visit Cappielow tonight.

He said: "With Ayr United coming to our place, I've got every belief in the players that we should go and get a result.

"They've got to have a wee bit of confidence about them and believe they're good enough.

"We've spoken about it, and everybody in the dressing-room believes that we're good enough to get out of this position.

"Ayr have gone on a decent run themselves but they've not opened up a gap on us.

"It's a case of going out there and believing we're better than Ayr United and proving it on the pitch."

Saturday's loss means that Morton have dropped back into the relegation play-off place, with Ayr having played a game fewer.

However, Grady was keen to play down the importance of the tie. He said: "From now until the end of the season, they're all massive games. You've got to take each game as it comes, and it's the next game so it's the most important one.

"We believe that at the game at Somerset Park when we were beaten, we should have had the game dead and buried.

"We've beaten them at the start of the season so we should have confidence and belief that we should win the game and the boys will be fired up as they are every week."

Striker David Witteveen joined on-loan from Hearts last Friday, but was only on the pitch for 15 minutes until Cuthbert's dismissal saw him hooked in a tactical reshuffle.

"He didn't really get an opportunity on Saturday," said Grady. "But he's definitely got goals in him and we just have to make sure we get enough balls in the box for him."
