LOAN STAR: David Witteveen has joined Morton from Hearts and says his new team is too good to be in the relegation zone.

ON-LOAN Morton striker David Witteveen is shocked his new side are embroiled in a relegation battle and is confident they have the quality to avoid the drop.

The big Austrian striker only joined from Hearts last Friday. He made his debut the following day against Airdrie United, then played a starring role in his first 90 minutes for the club during Tuesday's vital home win over Ayr United.

And despite Morton's precarious position in the league, Witteveen revealed he has been impressed with what he has seen of his team-mates.

He said: "When I was training with them, I was thinking 'Why are they only ninth?'. There is a good quality in this team and a good attitude

"I think they have the quality to be better than this position, and I'm sure we will stay in this league."

Witteveen was brought to Tynecastle in the summer by Csaba Laszlo, having previously played for SV Salzburg in his home country.

But the 24-year-old struggled for form and dropped out of the first-team picture altogether after Jim Jefferies took over as manager of the Edinburgh side.

But Witteveen believes his arrival at Cappielow provides an ideal opportunity to show his parent club exactly what he can do.

He said: "We got a new gaffer and he was not playing me and said I was not in his plans. This was a disappointment for me.

"But Morton is a new chance for me to show Jim Jefferies I am a good player. It is a good chance to show what I can do, score some goals and let Jefferies see I am a good player."

The striker has not scored regularly at Hearts - netting only once, against Rangers - but Witteveen is confident in his abilities and believes he can shine in the first division.

He said: "I'm strong in the box, at finishing and I'm good at holding onto the ball.

"It is important to be strong in this league because it is very physical and you have to be strong to keep the ball here. That is how I play."
