DECISIVE STRIKE: Stevie Masterton lashes home the winner against Ayr on Tuesday night to give Ton a vital three points.

MORTON'S win over Ayr United on Tuesday night could well prove to be invaluable when it comes to the end of the season.

The victory was the perfect response to the disappointment in Airdrie last Saturday.

Stevie Masterton's strike was enough to see off the Honest Men and it enabled Ton to haul themselves back out of the relegation play-off spot, three points ahead of Brian Reid's men, who still have a game in hand.

The management were enthused by the performance of the side but also lamented an inability to add a little sheen to such a vital win by notching a few more goals.

This is something which they will hope to address ahead of tomorrow's match at home to Queen of the South, where a win is vital in order to keep the pressure on Ayr, who travel to face stuttering Dundee, who have slipped off top spot and now sit second behind Inverness.

Home advantage has been noted as a considerable benefit for Morton during the run-in, but Queens have traditionally enjoyed their trips to Cappielow and will undoubtedly arrive in confident mood.

The Palmerston side have adopted a siege mentality since the departure of Gordon Chisholm to Dundee and have secured four points in their last two games under the stewardship of new boss Kenny Brannigan.

Ton will have to be at their very best if they are to get the win and bolster their chances of survival.

It is hardly the most prophetic statement but, at this stage of the season, another disappointing result could nullify the good work done on Tuesday.

With Kevin McKinlay missing, the door is opened for someone else to step in and fill the breach, while Ton manager James Grady will be desperate for Peter Weatherson to be fit and not succumb to his hernia injury.

The striker has habitually been the scourge of his former side - scoring twice against Queens already this season - and has been nursed through training in an effort to ensure he is ready to continue this record.

Confidence will be high going into the match but Grady will have his players fully focused on grabbing another crucial three points.
