TROPHY: Fitness was a factor as Moore led Sirling to a second division title last year.

ALLAN Moore has declared himself delighted with his team's fitness levels after a punishing pre-season regime involving regular double sessions.

The Ton boss has recruited a sports scientist to measure the fitness levels of his players and the rigorous approached has clearly worked wonders.

Moore's Stirling team surged to the Second Division title over the final two months of last season largely due to their superior fitness levels.

And the Ton manager has made it clear that only players with an appetite for hard work will be considered for his new-look Ton side.

He said: "We've had the results back from the sports scientist and they are excellent.

"The players have been hitting the peaks we have been asking for. Every team I had at Stirling Albion, from the first day to the last, were very fit. I've said to the players they may not be the best players in the First Division but they will be able to match any opponent if they have higher fitness levels.

"If they are not as fit as some opponents they will find themselves being dominated. They know if they want to play in the Morton team this year then they will have to be able to get about the pitch.

"We had a bad year last season and it's up to me and Mark McNally to make sure we improve on that.

"If we get fitness levels up then you never know what you can achieve. Being fit breeds confidence."

With a solid fitness base firmly established, Moore's concern is now to work on tactics and team shapes over the course of the next week.

He said: "We haven't really done anything tactically with the players yet so we will use the time away to work on shaping the back four."

Moore is running the rule over a host of trialists this week ahead of the start of the domestic season a week on Sunday against Dumbarton in the Alba Challenge Cup.
