David MacGregor claims his fitness and versatility were the key to him winning another contract at Morton.

The 29-year-old signed a one-year deal earlier this week and so prolonged his stay at the club where he made his debut in 2000.

The utility man has been quick to embrace Allan Moore's revolution and believes his adaptability and levels of fitness suited the new Ton boss, who is operating on a limited budget.

MacGregor, pictured in action during Morton's 13-0 Renfrewshire Cup semi-final thrashing of Moorcroft AFC on Tuesday night, said: "Over the years at Morton, I have played all the way across the back four and even in midfield. With the club running with a smaller squad this year, it pays to be adaptable.

"In pre-season, the manager has been looking for me to play right-back, so I'll be aiming to get a regular game there.

"But if the need arises, I am capable of filling in elsewhere.

"I was delighted to sign the contract.

"It's been unsettling for myself and a lot of boys over the summer but the manager gave me the opportunity to prove my ability and fitness, and I took it.

"The manager's personality and ambition is apparent. He's tidied things up around the training ground and, although pre-season has been really hard, the boys have knuckled down."

MacGregor also revealed Moore has been working hard to shore up a backline that shipped 65 goals last season.

He said: "It's very important we have a good shape when we've not got the ball and that's something we've been working on, particularly with Mark McNally (Moore's assistant manager) who was a defender himself.

"It's more to do with when to press the ball, how to keep our shape and be more compact, rather than chase around individually."

MacGregor is Ton's longest-serving player and is hopeful of earning a testimonial.

He said: "It's still to be discussed, but it's a possibility.
